In 2002, the DuPont Rayon WWII bronze memorial plaque containing the names of 692 employees who served in WWII was mistakenly placed in the dumpster. Several DuPont employees saw the plaque and pulled it out of the dumpster. Following its rescue, several employees set out to find the plaque a new home. After several years of fund raising and with the help of the community, the plaque was placed on a new granite wall in what is now known as Old Hickory Veterans Memorial Park. The park and memorial were dedicated on Memorial Day of 2005.
